Sometimes it costs a little extra to care. It depends on what you care about.

I opened Melt to provide a healthy local eatery for my friends, family, and neighborhood. While I am pleased that people enjoy the atmosphere & service as much as the food, my top priority is always the quality & sourcing of the food. Some people assume our pricing has gone up due to hype, or belonging to a trend. This is simply untrue.

I’d like to think of myself & staff at Melt as both pioneers & crusaders in the casual food service industry of Cincinnati. I believe in friendly service, a cozy environment, and good clean foods. It’s a choice- a small showcase of what I am for, not against. Melt does not serve foods filled with chemicals and preservatives, or microwaved for consumption. These are my core guidelines for eating & preparing foods.

Melt puts a lot of hard work and passion into preparing your meal. Since we opened November 23rd, 2005, distributor prices have been steadily ascending. The price increases you see @ your local grocery store over the years are proportionately the same for us. We adjust our prices accordingly for this very reason.

Over the years we have found local sources we would rather buy from who could meet our restaurant’s demands. All of our meats are free of drugs & hormones, all breads free of preservatives, and we make everything in the house without corn syrups, trans fats, or processed foods. When we cannot use organic or low spray produce, we soak them in Veggie Wash and rinse thoroughly. It costs us more to care about what we put on your plate, or what we package it in. All of our carryout packaging is biodegradable or recyclable, which costs 3-4 times more than Styrofoam or plastics which the local recycling company will not accept.

The prices we charge at Melt ensure and support the best quality ingredients, and our local economy.

Thank you for Melting with us!

CARRYOUT PACKAGING

Melt uses biodegradable packaging for carryout, with the exception of two items:

1) plastic soufflé cups-Consistent availability & ultimate durability have posed problems for our usage.

2) foil wrap-Aluminum foil is used to keep our sandwiches hot. Our foods are not heated in any aluminum pots or pans, but sandwiches are wrapped in deli paper 1st and aluminum foil 2nd. When you are finished, just make an aluminum foil ball and aim for your recycling bin!

We Use Corn Cups & Lids for orders of composed salads in our Grab’n’Go merchandiser, carry-out side items, & beverages!

“These compostable cups are clear and are made from an annually renewable resource – corn! With the same look and feel as clear PET cups, these compostable cups contain NatureWorks PLA, an environmentally friendly alternative to PET. The cups are odorless, completely non-allergenic and are compostable. To dispose of them, toss them in a compost bin. That’s right, our PLA cups will completely compost under commercial composting conditions in just 45-60 days.”

Medium-weight Cutlery- PSM forks
“Our medium weight PSM (Plastic Starch Material) biodegradable cutlery is made from non-GMO vegetable starch. It not only exhibits superior performance over other biodegradable utensils, but is OK Compost certified. These biodegradable utensils break down under commercial composting conditions in about 95 days. 100% degradation occurs over a slightly longer period of time. “

NOTE: If you do not need a fork for your carry-out, please let us know. Biodegradable forks are TRIPLE the price of medium weight plastic forks.

We use Kraft bags, paper soup cups, PLA lined coffee cups, recycled hot cup sleeves, biodegradable plastic carryout bags, and 100 % RECYCLED Bio-Plus boxes for packaging food to go. Not all of our paper products are made from recycled paper, but it is our goal.

RECYCLING

We are one of the very few restaurants which recycle all glass, plastic, metal, and cardboard used by our customers and kitchen. It only costs $50 a month from RUMPKE RECYCLING, but it also takes a lot of dedication and hard work from our entire staff to properly clean and break down containers/boxes for recycling every week.

COMPOSTING

-Our Kitchen staff diligently sorts all veggie scraps to compost or for making veggie stock everyday.
-Our Front of House staff composts coffee & tea after brewing.

FREE OF PRESERVATIVES, CHEMICALS, AND HORMONES?

-Melt only uses Meats free of hormones, preservatives, and antibiotics.

Our Roast Beef, Honey Maple Turkey, and Turkey Bacon are from Applegate Farms.

-All of our breads, and any desserts, are free of preservatives, trans-fats, and dough conditioners.

Hello Melters! After attending the first Food Task Organization Meeting last week, I feel compelled to forward this link to you. The idea of “Meatless Mondays” came up, not as a tactic to convert those who eat meat into die-hard vegetarians, but to help reduce harmful emissions. It’s just like Lenten Friday, or choosing one day a week to not drive a car-every little bit helps. It also gives your body a chance to clean and regenerate itself if you consume higher amounts of fruits, veggies, and whole grains on this chosen day, instead of replacing meat with dairy and starch. The article is short and to the point. If you eat food, and live on the planet earth, I urge you to read it. Thank You for Melting With Us, Lisa Kagen (Owner & Business Manager)
