How “Green” Is Melt?

September 1st, 2009

CARRYOUT PACKAGING

Melt uses biodegradable packaging for carryout, with the exception of  two items:

1) plastic soufflé cups-Consistent availability & ultimate durability have posed problems for our usage.

2) foil wrap-Aluminum foil is used to keep our sandwiches hot. Our foods are not heated in any aluminum pots or pans, but sandwiches are wrapped in deli paper 1st and aluminum foil 2nd. When you are finished, just make an aluminum foil ball and aim for your recycling bin!

We Use Corn Cups & Lids for orders of composed salads in our Grab’n’Go merchandiser, carry-out side items, & beverages!

“These compostable cups are clear and are made from an annually renewable resource – corn!  With the same look and feel as clear PET cups, these compostable cups contain NatureWorks PLA, an environmentally friendly alternative to PET.  The cups are odorless, completely non-allergenic and are compostable. To dispose of them, toss them in a compost bin.  That’s right, our PLA cups will completely compost under commercial composting conditions in just 45-60 days.”

Medium-weight Cutlery- PSM forks
“Our medium weight PSM (Plastic Starch Material) biodegradable cutlery is made from non-GMO vegetable starch.  It not only exhibits superior performance over other biodegradable utensils, but is OK Compost certified. These biodegradable utensils break down under commercial composting conditions in about 95 days.  100% degradation occurs over a slightly longer period of time. “

NOTE: If you do not need a fork for your carry-out, please let us know. Biodegradable forks are TRIPLE the price of medium weight plastic forks.

We use Kraft bags, paper soup cups, PLA lined coffee cups, recycled hot cup sleeves, biodegradable plastic carryout bags, and 100 % RECYCLED Bio-Plus boxes for packaging food to go. Not all of our paper products are made from recycled paper, but it is our goal.

RECYCLING

We are one of the very few restaurants which recycle all glass, plastic, metal, and cardboard used by our customers and kitchen. It only costs $50 a month from RUMPKE RECYCLING, but it also takes a lot of dedication and hard work from our entire staff to properly clean and break down containers/boxes for recycling every week.

COMPOSTING

-Our Kitchen staff diligently sorts all veggie scraps to compost or for making veggie stock everyday.
-Our Front of House staff composts coffee & tea after brewing.

FREE OF PRESERVATIVES, CHEMICALS, AND HORMONES?

-Melt only uses Meats free of hormones, preservatives, and antibiotics.

Our Roast Beef, Honey Maple Turkey, and Turkey Bacon are from Applegate Farms.

-All of our breads, and any desserts, are free of preservatives, trans-fats, and dough conditioners.
