For almost three years, Melt, Northside’s “vegan-friendly, eclectic deli” (to quote the menu), has been pursuing its mission to serve whole, unprocessed foods and “fill bellies up with happiness.” To judge from the steady stream of customers – families with young children, couples, college kids and Northsiders of all stripes – Melt seems to be on the right track.

The upside – When you enter Melt, you’ll see just a handful of tables and a counter with menu offerings on large blackboards behind it. There’s also a second, larger room with tables and a large patio out back. Melt serves almost 20 sandwiches ($6.75-$7.50), a half-dozen salads ($7.50), several daily soups ($3.75) and a few meal-sized appetizers (Mediterranean plate, brie plate and gourmet nachos, each $7.50). Sandwiches all come with a choice of chips or mixed greens topped with one of seven dressings. For an extra dollar, you can upgrade to fruit salad, pesto pasta veggie salad or rosemary potatoes, and for $2.50 more, you can get one of the soups or a half salad. Order at the counter, and a staffer brings your food to your table.
